Jim's Project
Decking

About this Project

When Jim called us, he had a long list of projects he wanted to tackle — and after more than 20 years in his home without any updates, it was time for a full refresh. The natural cedar siding had deteriorated badly, the roof had aged out, and the interior still carried original popcorn ceilings. Jim knew his home needed serious attention, and he wanted it done right. We began with the exterior, replacing all of the old cedar siding with new, durable materials and finishing it off with a full professional paint job. We also replaced the roof with a Class 4 shingle system for maximum protection and longevity — a major upgrade that will serve him well for years to come. Inside, our team completely scraped the old popcorn texture from every ceiling, including the garage, then installed new drywall in the garage and painted the entire interior for a clean, fresh finish. Outside, we added a beautiful touch of green by hanging vines along the stone above the garage, softening the look and tying the landscaping together.
The final phase was Jim’s deck — one of the biggest challenges of the project. The original structure was severely rotted, warped, and unsafe. We rebuilt the front deck from the ground up, ensuring a strong, level foundation. The back deck required extra precision, since part of it sat on a pier-and-beam structure and the rest was laid over a flat roof. Our crew carefully removed every plank, reinforced the flat roofing system with new asphalt and tar, and rebuilt the decking to be both solid and watertight. For the finish, we used cedar decking treated with a custom Hemp Shield stain that we developed specifically for this project. Jim wanted to be able to walk barefoot across his decks comfortably, so we made sure every board was perfectly smooth and sealed. The result is nothing short of phenomenal — a complete transformation that restored the home’s beauty, structure, and longevity from top to bottom. Jim’s house now looks and feels brand new, and every corner reflects the level of detail and craftsmanship that defines Focal Point Designs.
